Bronchitis and Pneumonia

Bronchitis and pneumonia are both respiratory conditions that involve inflammation and infection in the lungs. They share common symptoms, such as coughing, chest discomfort, shortness of breath, and fatigue. While their severity and treatment may differ, both conditions can significantly impact respiratory health if not properly addressed. Both bronchitis and pneumonia are conditions able to be treated at PromptMed Urgent Care.

Bronchitis: is caused by inflammation of the bronchial tubes, which are the pathways that carry air to our lungs. This inflammation causes coughing, mucus production, and difficulty breathing. The inflammation in the bronchial tubes is typically caused by a viral infection such as the common cold or flu. There are two main types of bronchitis:

Acute Bronchitis: typically lasts from a few days to a couple of weeks.

Symptoms

  • Persistent cough (with or without mucus)
  • Wheezing or chest tightness
  • Fatigue
  • Sore throat or mild fever

Chronic Bronchitis: long term condition often caused by smoking or exposure to irritants like pollution or dust. Typically lasts at least three months a year for two consecutive years.

Symptoms

  • Persistent cough with mucus
  • Shortness of breath
  • Frequent respiratory infections

Tips for Bronchitis (acute or chronic)

  • Stop smoking
  • Avoid pollutants
  • Wash your hands regularly
  • Get vaccinated for flu and pneumonia

Pneumonia: is a serious infection that inflames the alveoli (small air sacs) in one or both lungs. These air sacs are vulnerable to filling up with fluid or pus, causing symptoms that can range from mild to life-threatening.

Symptoms

  • Cough (green, yellow, or bloody mucus)
  • Fever, sweating, chills
  • Shortness of breath
  • Chest pain when breathing deeply
  • Fatigue and muscle aches
  • Confusion (especially in older adults)
  • Nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea
