The Flu
The flu season begins in October and lasts until March, with the peak height of flu season generally during December to February.
The flu is a contagious respiratory illness caused by the influenza virus. It affects the nose, throat, and lungs and can range from cases of mild to severe. Whether your case is mild, severe, or anywhere in between, our providers at PromptMed Urgent Care are equipped to aid in your recovery.
Symptoms
- Fever or chills
- Cough
- Sore throat
- Runny or stuffy nose
- Muscle or body aches
- Fatigue
- Headache
The influenza virus is primarily spread through respiratory droplets which can be picked up when a person infected coughs or sneezes. The virus can live for up to 48 hours on some surfaces, especially in cool and dry environments. This means infection can also come from touching a contaminated surface and subsequently touching your own eyes, mouth, or nose.
Tips to stay healthy
- Wash your hands often: The flu season is long; every time you wash your hands you are giving yourself a better chance of staying healthy and working towards building good habits for all flu seasons to come.
- Sanitize your cell phone: The influenza virus can live on nonporous surfaces like your phone screen for several hours.
- Practice good respiratory hygiene: When everyone practices good respiratory hygiene, the overall spread of flu in the community decreases reducing outbreaks and protecting each other.
