Sinus Infection (Sinusitis)
At PromptMed Urgent Care, a provider can determine the severity of your sinus infection and may consequently prescribe medication for pain relief, decongestants and if necessary, antibiotics.
Sinus infection (sinusitis) - what is it?
A sinus infection (sinusitis) occurs when the space in our skull around the nose, eyes, and forehead become inflamed, causing poor drainage; this can happen for a variety of reasons. Inflammation in the sinuses could be due to viral, bacterial, or fungal infections. Inflammation in the sinuses could also be due to allergies or other environmental factors.
Symptoms of a sinus infection (sinusitis)
- Facial pain or pressure: Especially around the eyes, cheeks and forehead
- Congestion: Feeling of a blocked nose that makes it hard to breathe
- Nasal discharge: Often green or yellow in color
- Reduced sense of smell and taste: Severe congestion can interfere with these senses
- Headache: Pain that may worsen when bending forward
- Sore throat or cough: Postnasal drip (mucus dripping down the back of the throat) can cause irritation
- Fever: Sometimes occurs, especially with bacterial infections
- Fatigue: Persistent tiredness is common during sinus infections
Types of sinus infections
- Acute sinusitis: Often caused by viruses and lasts up to four weeks
- Chronic sinusitis: Lasts for 12 weeks or longer an is usually caused by prolonged irritation, allergies, or a structural issue in the sinuses
Recommended home care and preventative measures
- Saline nasal rinses or sprays can help keep the nasal passages moist and clear mucus
- Using a humidifier, staying hydrated, and applying warm compresses to the face to relieve sinus pressure and pain
- Avoiding irritants, like smoke or allergens, is often recommended, as these can worsen symptoms
If you are experiencing symptoms lasting more than 10 days or find that your symptoms continue to worsen after initially getting better, it may be time to seek a healthcare provider as those are symptoms of a bacterial sinus infection. If you would also simply like help to aid in your recovery, you are more than welcome into any PromptMed Urgent Care.
