Viral Illness

Put simply, a viral illness is an infection caused by a virus. Viruses are tiny, non-living infectious agents made up of genetic material.  Viruses cannot reproduce on their own. So, in order to replicate, they infect host cells (our cells) and hijack their "machinery" to replicate and create more viruses. This often damages the host cells in the process.

Common Viral Illnesses

  • Common Cold
  • Flu
  • COVID-19
  • Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV)
  • Norovirus
  • Rotavirus
  • Chickenpox
  • Measles
  • Hand, Foot, and Mouth Disease
  • Herpes Simplex Virus

Symptoms

  • Fever
  • Fatigue
  • Cough and sore throat
  • Muscle aches
  • Diarrhea and vomiting
  • Rash or skin changes

Viruses are spread through respiratory droplets, which disperse when an infected person coughs, sneezes, or talks. A virus can also live on a surface for up to 48 hours, leaving it contaminated for the duration. The good news is prevention for these viruses is easy, and free! Practice good hygiene in your hand washing. Wash your hands often, especially throughout flu season (October-February) as viruses tend to thrive in cold and dry temperatures.
